ACEO DAY 227 RUBY ALASKA IDITAROD CHECKPOINT

RUBY ALASKA

Cripple to Ruby is a 70 mile run.  When the mushers get into Ruby they will be right at the halfway point and they will have completed two long legs of the race back to back.  The travel time between these long runs ranges from 10.5 hours to 15 hours.  Tiring for dogs and mushers.  Three teams have scratched and very few are left with all 16 dogs.  Strategy will be more of a factor from here on.

As of the 2000 census, Ruby had a population of 188.  At it's peak it had 3,000 residents.  Local residents nicknamed the town "The Gem of the Yukon" because it is located along the Yukon River.  The largest gold nugget ever found in Alaska was found near Ruby in 1998, 294.10 Troy Ounces.
